AUSTRALIAN TEAM FOR THE WBF BRIDGE EVENT
PRIOR TO THE SALT LAKE CITY OLYMPICS
The Australian Bridge Federation was
invited by the World Bridge Federation on 12th November to participate in the
4th IOC Grand Prix as an attraction sport prior to the Winter Olympics in Salt
Lake City in February 2002. The Australian Open Team was invited to take up this
offer. With the short notice, only three of the six members of the team that played
in the Bermuda Bowl in Paris were available.
In these circumstances, the
Management Committee of the ABF, at its meeting of 15/16 December, decided that
it was unable to endorse any players as THE Australian team. The Committee noted
that Jose Damiani, President of the World Bridge Federation, stated that he would
"prefer to cooperate with the NBOs in the designation of their players". While
the Committee is supportive of the WBF objective, it has decided that it must
decline the invitation to nominate pairs.
