Officials
David Stern (Chef de Mission)
Alex Smirnov (Coach)

In preparation for this year's world championships, a formal coaching programme was established under the guidance of international bridge teacher and expert Alex Smirnov of Germany, a regular and welcome visitor to Australian bridge tournaments. Encompassing five days over two weekends in Sydney together with close supervision of our youth pairs at the recent Autumn Nationals in Adelaide, Alex led the players through a series of talks, system reviews, practice sessions and post mortems under full world championship conditions including screens and vugraph.

In conjunction with ongoing practice and preparation, we are confident that our players will be well positioned to be very competitive in the forthcoming Championships in China. Through the generous support of the ABF Alex Smirnov will accompany the delegation as coach of our teams.

Both teams are well-experienced at the international youth level with the Under-26 team boasting a string of recent national open titles and four members of the Under-21 team coming off their impressive victory in the 2011 APBF Championships in Malaysia.

In addition and through the generous sponsorship of an anonymous donor, a combined Zone 7 (Oceania) under-26 ladies team comprising Peter Gill (non-playing captain), Laura Ginnan - Lucy Henbest, Pascale Gardiner - Ella Pattison (Australia) and Jennifer Black - Andi Boughey (New Zealand) will compete in the Gianarrigo Rona Cup (World Girls Championship) alongside the under-26 and under-21 teams in Taicang.

We wish all teams the best of luck in the tournament.

David Stern
Chairman
Australian Bridge Federation Youth Committee.
