Final Contract & Result: 4S -2
Play Details: See actual Appeal below.

Tournament Director's Report and Decision:

Called at conclusion of Play
E/W claim that 1D was explained as C and D or H and S
N/S claim that 1D was explained as S and C or H and D
E/W claim damage due to belief that N held Majors

Ruling: That explanation as heard by E/W was more likely to have been made than that as "assumed" by N/S
Claim of damage was consistant with misexplanation.
Adjusted score Law 12 to +3 E/W -3 N/S
Average on board: -370

Richard Grenside Director

1. Infraction by N/S in failure to give accurate information may have contributed to W problem.
2. West could, nevertheless, have made the contract.

"If declarer instead of letting hand win 3rd trick took over in dummy, cashed the ace of spades and played the small diamond back to hand he could now take the heart finess no matter how the spades were distributed. If N has four spades to KQ and south has K of H, the contract is going down.

We claim we are being penalised by declarer's bad play. We still maintain, however that we gave the right explanation at the table. There was confusion, and declarer could not state exactly what was said. Declarer never actually asked for the explanation. This was done when N asked him about 1H".

After Margaret Bourke's 3C, Lydia Beech had no qualms about rolling out Roman Keycard Blackwood.

East led SJ won by the ace in dummy. Next came CK on which East played the J. Discounting the possibility of East false carding in trumps (a la Garozzo), at trick 3 Margaret played a spade off dummy to West's king. The spade exit was won by the queen and trumps were then drawn finishing carefully in hand.

Margaret had noted with interest that East had discarded four diamonds and was hanging on to hearts like a person with the jack. East looked to be either 2-4-6-1 or 2-5-5-1. Further more it seemed probable that West was treating her hand as a spade diamond 2 suiter as to open 2S with say K1098x J Kxx xxx and treating the xxxx of clubs as the second suit was unlikely.

So Margaret played H4 to H8 at trick eight and when this held could come back to HQ and repeat the finesse to notch up 12 tricks (2S,5H,4C and 1D). Nicely done !

What happened at the other tables on this board? A Daily Bulletin researcher had a look at the score sheets and can report :

In the open seven South's decalred 6H all failing; other slams bid were 7Cx1, 6NTx3 (making once on D lead) and 6C by Keiran Crowe-Mai making 12 tricks on a defensive slip.

18 South's played game in hearts (2 failing c) and 11 were in game in NT. One West was in 4Dx down 1, another was in 2SX -1100, and one pair bid only to 3H. The strangest score was 4S by N ! down only 3.

In the Womens, 6H was bid 8 times all failing, 16 pairs were in game in hearts (failing twicec) and 3 pairs bid 3NT.

2 pairs bid 6NT making once on a diamond lead. Margaret Abrahams was the third declarer in the room in 6C and she also made her contract with the help of a defensive error to score their slams.

# An aggressive 4 Spade bid by Andrew Peake(South)

Bobby Evans had a good board as declarer in 4 spades. North lead DA on which South played the Jack and continued with DK to which everyone followed. Then North switched to H6 won by South's Ace and the HQ exit was won by West's King.

Evans figured that North would have doubled 4S holding CK as well as strong diamonds. It seemed that a stiff CK in the South hand would be needed and if not then there was still a slight hope. Can you see it?

Evans now played C3 to the Ace and continued with C5 from dummy. North had neglected to give count in clubs so South thought that the clubs were 6 3 3 1 and did not go in with CK and now Evans had 10 tricks!

It is sometimes correct not to give count but on this occasion it proved costly.

Peter Jamieson.

Anne Powell and Ruth Jamieson picked up 12 imps by bidding this thin slam. Ruth's 1NT rebid showed 15-18 balanced. 2NT was game-forcing (Crowhurst style) and a puppet to 3C. 3H showed 5+ hearts as well as 5+ spades and 4 hearts showed at least 3 hearts.

Anne decided that there were numerous suitable South hands which would a reasonable play for slam. There was no entirely satisfactory way to explore further so she took the punt and jumped to 6 hearts!
