Quarter Finals
The final 8 consists of
Netherlands
Israel
Poland
Denmark
Belgium
England
Finland
Australia
Interestingly, Netherlands choose England rather than the ‘B’ qualifier Australia.
The quarter finals are
Netherlands vs England
Israel vs Finland
Poland vs Australia
Denmark vs Belgium (where this was a forced selection)
The quarter finals are two 14 board sets commencing at 11.30 local time which is 9.30pm Australian Eastern Standard daylight time.
The first set of the Poland vs Australia and the Netherlands vs England matches were on BBO at 9.30pm Australian Eastern Standard daylight time.
1st set of 14 boards
Australia v Poland 20 47
In the Open room J McMAHON sat West and N RANSON sat East
In the Closed room M SMITH and J THOMPSON were North South
The bridge gods served up a wild set of boards for this set. There was action right from the outset.
Board 1
Open Room
Closed Room
(Where 2♦ was a good raise in ♥s)
With the ♦s breaking as they did there was 10 tricks only – lose 10 imps
Board 2
The hand was flat in 6♥ making.
Board 4
Open Room
Closed Room
The board was flat in 6♥ doubled making. 6♠ is a cheap insurance save but neither pair thought it correct. In both rooms, it looks reasonable as East had 1 trick in defence and West none.
In the 3 of the first 4 hands, there have been 12 red cards in one of the NS hands (also board 3 was a potential swingy board as well).
There were other swings and then came this hand
Board 13
Open Room
South opened a strong but perhaps tactical 3♣ and EW vul bid game.
Closed Room
The second double by North was probably looking for a ♣ game but it was converted. Score -730
2nd set of 14 boards
Australia v Poland 40 27
Poland were little unlucky on 2 boards in the second set and we won the set.
Board 15
6♦ requires that the opener has the ♦K. Do you want to be in 6♦?
The opener did not have the ♦K but had the ♠K and there was a singleton ♥ with three ♦s down 1. Poland bid it and we didn’t.
Total for the two sets
Australia v Poland 60 74
