End of the Seventh Day
DAY 7 Saturday 21st September
Wuhan is 2 hours behind AEST. The BBO match times are shown in AEST as a 24-hour clock.
Match 19 12:00 to 14:30
The Senior team were on BBO.
In the open room - for Australia Andrew Braithwaite was North and Arjuna de Livera was South and for England John Holland was West and Alan Mould was East.
In the closed room - for England Malcolm Pryor was North and David Muller was South and for Australia Bruce Neill was West and Avi Kanetkar was East.
Boards of interest in this match:
There were a few very thin games that might have been bid but the major potential swing hand was the following.
Board 3
In the open room, England bid to 6♦
3♦ was a good ♦ suit interested in slam.
In the closed room, Australia bid to 3NT
2♦ was slam interest in ♦s.
Each auction had about the same information. Does West move toward slam or not? It is almost maximum for a weak NT with a 3 card ♦ fit two kings and an ace with a doubleton. Australia choose not to and England decided to move. I think the hand is worth one try.
How good is 6♦? Any 2 2 ♦ break is cold or 3 1 ♦ break with a singleton ♦Q gives a very good shot. If you have a ♦ loser, then you require a ♣ finesse in essence. This makes it a little under 70% (with no opposition bidding).

Board 28
Andy Hung and Nabil Edgtton were one of only two pairs to bid 6♠ on this hand in the open field.
Well done to them. Given West has shown high card points, the slam is good.
The match was of a very high standard

Match 21 18:10 to 20:40
Australia were not shown on BBO so we will highlight a couple of boards in the Italy vs Netherlands match in the open.
Boards of interest in this match:
Board 6
6♠ is a reasonably good contract when you see the NS cards (the ♥J and the ♦9 in the North hand make it reasonable as you can play East for one of the two ♦ honours) but it is difficult to get there with confidence with no opposition bidding. It is hard in a standard type system for South to set ♠s below game and then determine that all North’s cards are working.
Anyway, the Netherlands bid it and the Italians did not.
Board 12
The Italian auction was as follows.
West led the ♦K and East played the ♦J and then the ♦4 to the ♦T and another ♦ cleared the suit. The defence had 5 tricks so it was one off. (If West leads a ♠, declarer must win the ♠K and play another ♠ knocking out the entry to the 4th ♦ trick if West takes the ♠A and if he ducks then switch to ♣s.)
The Netherlands auction was as follows.
Lauria bid 1♥ in third seat and Versace, as West, led a ♥. Declarer won led a small ♣ to the ♣K and East ducked (he had to win and switch to a ♦J). Now declarer played a ♠ and that was that for the defence.
