Round 1
Australia v Chinese Taipei 55 27 which converts to 16.72 3.28
Australia has gone to lead after this round but there are several teams in contention.
Two major swings to Chinese Taipei occurred during the match.
On board 23 we competed to the wrong 3 level part score doubled for -500 and 11 imps out and then on Board 26 we lost 13 imps when we played 5♦ down 2 and they made 3NT.
There were many positive boards.
These included when they were overboard in slam (requiring a finesse that failed) and we stopped in game, we bid game making (board 20) when they stopped in a part score. The other 30 imps were gathered by better part score judgement.
One board of note was board 18.
This hand is interesting as far as high-level judgement is concerned. These sort of hands can create double game swings easily.
The summary of all 8 matches is as follows:
4♠ making twice
4♠ +1 once
4♠ DBL making + 1 twice
5♠ DBL making once [this is Australia see below]
5♥ making once
5♥ DBL making once
Matt Smith played 5♠x nicely on board 18 as West.
♥A was lead and ruffed in dummy, a ♠ was played to the ♠K and ♠A. He ruffed the next ♥ with the ♠9. He then played a ♣ to hand and run the ♠10. He later gave up the ♦A for 11 tricks.
All scores were as follows:

Round 2
Australia has a bye.
There were a few surprises in this round which mostly benefited Australia’s hopes of finishing in the top two places.
China Hong Kong struggled against the bottom team Japan and Indonesia really struggled against Chinese Taipei (who we beat in the last round).
The following board is very dangerous as there is potential for a double game swing. As in the previous match, this is the kind of board that can gain or lose a lot of imps if you judge incorrectly. When each side has a double fit (NS ♠s and ♦s and EW ♣s and ♥s), then this is when the total trick taking capacity of each hand becomes crucial.
The summary of all 8 matches is as follows:
3♠ +2 once
4♠ making twice
4♠ + 1 once
4♥ making once
4♥ +1 twice
4♥ DBL +1 once
This is another hand that swung a huge number of imps. 6♥s is beaten on a ♣ ruff and 6NT makes as the 4 1 ♥ break is straightforward.
All scores were as follows:

Japan 34 |
