In most matches across the field the contract was 1NT by East or West, making around 8 tricks. Playing transfers over a 1♣ opening, Renee bid 1♠ over Ben's 1♣ opening to show either 6-9 points without a Major, or an invitational hand with diamonds. At this point North bid 1NT with their balanced 14 count. This was passed round to Renee who found the double. The contract went two down, vulnerable for plus 500, compared with 120 at the other table.
