Transnational Day 3
DAY 11 Wednesday 25th September
The Australian involvement is now solely in the Transnational event.
In this event, as the name suggests, entries are not limited just to players from the same country and many players have embraced this concept.
There are 110 entries and, even though the field comprises of players not to reach the quarter finals in their respective sections, there are many very good teams and players.
This is the 3rd of 3 days of Swiss play with 5 matches today. Then follows the knockout round of 32, 16, 8, 4 and the final [which is Saturday 28th September].

The Penultimate Round of Qualifying
Boards of interest in this match:
PIONEERS lost on this board which cost 11 imps and made their qualification more difficult. They then had a small loss in the last round to just miss out.
How do you play 3NT form North on a ♣ lead?
You win the ♣K no ♣q appearing. Even if ♦s are 3 2, there are only 8 tricks. Therefore, you play a ♠7 to the ♠K which holds. What now?
- You can duck a ♦ and if they are 3 2, you will get 1 ♠, 1 ♥, 5 ♦s and 2 ♣s for nine tricks.
- You can play ♥6 to the ♥A and play on ♠s. You will now get 4 ♠s, 1 ♥, 2 ♦s and 2 ♣s for nine tricks.
Which is better? Both are high percentage where a) is about 68% whereas with b) the only way that they can beat you is for them to be able to cash 5 ♥ tricks (ie West needs ♥KJ9xx and East the ♠A. Therefore, b) is better.
The ♦s were 4 2 and North went 2 off when a ♦ was ducked..
AURUSSIA had a very big second last round and this placed them in a good qualifying position with a round to go and, even with a small loss in the last round, they qualified.
This board helped.
West opens 1♣, North overcalls 1♥, East and South pass and West reopens with a Double which ends the auction. East leads the ♥K and declarer makes 3 tricks for 1100.
