What should I Bid? - Best enquiry for November 2001

The best November submission came from David Kalnins.

Hand:

ª 10xx

¨ AQxxx
§ xxx

Nil vulnerable, partner is dealer
Bidding: West North EastSouth
 1C2H*Pass4H
4NTP5D5H
PassPass?

Comments:
2H = Majors, 5+ /5+ Playing 5 card majors, strong NT 4NT shows long clubs with secondary diamonds.

And David's Response:
Hi David, It looks as though partner has something like:

ª Ax

¨ Kxxx
§ AKJ10xx
or ª Kxx
© --
¨ Kxxx
§ AKJ10xx

I will bid 5NT to right side a contract in 6C in case partner's spades are Kx. If partner has Ax then he/she can bid 6D and all's well! We are not going to get rich defending 5H so lets have a go at a minor suit slam. I would be interested in seeing the full deal.

All the best,
David Beauchamp

And David Kalnins' reply:
Partner's hand was:

 ª J
© x
¨ KJ10xx
§ AQJ9xx

Clubs are 3-1 with the king under the ace and the diamonds 2-1 so 5H is cold. 6D fails by one trick and 6C by two when the hand with 3 clubs has a singleton diamond. Partner will certainly prefer 6D to 6C if you give them an option with 5NT.

Cheers,
Dave
